TRAQUAIR
TRAQUAIR |
Dates from: 1107 Traquair House began as a royal hunting lodge in 1107; it was enlarged in 1492 and saw regular additions through the 16th and 17th centuries. The house was later used as a refuge for Roman Catholic priests when the Stuarts of Traquair supported Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite cause. The painting is based on a 2008 view.

The Long Way Around A Legend of Traquair House
. . . For over 250 years, both friend and foe alike have been prohibited from using the estate's proper entrance -- the Bear Gates. More monument than entry, the gates have an air of isolation about and and have remained locked for almost three-hundred years . . .
Traquair House is included in the Lowlands Map.
