THREAVE
THREAVE
|
Dates from: 1100s Threave Castle sits on an island in the River Dee, which originally was the site of a small village that could only be approached by boat. The first fortress at Threave was erected as a royal retreat in the 12th century; it was destroyed in 1308. A new keep arose in 1369, augmented by expansion and fortification in 1447. Much of what remains today dates from this era. The castle was besieged in 1455, and again in 1640, after which the structure was abandoned and fell into ruin. The painting is based on a 2006 view.

An excerpt from the book Scotland: Castles and Clans the Legends.
Wizards of Intuition A Legend of Threave Castle
. . . Cold damp air fills my lungs, the breath of life visible upon exhale. There is a peace here, ten stories above the earth. Surrounded by silence, I hear my own heartbeat. High above the blacksmiths, carpenters, and cooks, life could be lived uninterrupted. As part of my routine, I climb the additional stairs leading to the battlements of Threave Castle. From this vantage, I have seen as the seasons unfold, nature's extremes of harmony and chaos in impressive display. Before this day and the next four end, I will experience extremes no less wild . . .
Told from the perspective of Malcolm and Elizabeth Fleming
Threave Castle is included in the Lowlands Map.
