TANTALLON
TANTALLON |
Dates from: 1350
Tantallon Castle sits atop rocky cliffs overlooking the Firth of Forth. The castle is considered the greatest fortress of Renaissance Scotland. The stonework began in 1350 and was expanded in 1534. The resultant fortress was besieged and destroyed in 1639, and by 1651 reduced to the ruin that it is today. The painting illustrates a view of Tantallon from 2004.

An excerpt from the book Scotland: Castles and Clans the Legends.
Disruptions A Legend of Tantallon Castle
. . . Sadler remained in
Edinburgh until his house was besieged by an angry mob. After
a narrow miss from a musket ball, he moved to the nearby Tantallon
Castle. In a letter to Henry VIII, dated 6th November 1513, he
remarked, Temptallaon is of
suche strength as I nede not to feare the malice of myne enymeys,
and there fre do thinke myself nowe to be out of daunger. . . .
Tantallon Castle is included in the Lowlands Map.
