SPYNIE
SPYNIE |
Dates from: 1200 Today, Spynie Palace lies three miles inland from the sea. In the 13th century, however, it sat on a headland jutting into the sea waters of Loch Spynie and was capable of harboring large ships. The Palace originated in the 13th century as a residence for the bishops of Moray. In 1460, David’s Keep was added. After the Protestant reformation in 1560, the palace passed to the Lindsay family. The castle suffered sieges in 1640 and 1645, and by 1688, after the last Roman bishops were removed from Scotland, Spynie became derelict. The painting depicts its appearance in 2007.

Signs of Life A Legend of Spynie Palace
. . . The palace was abandoned centuries ago; however, the locals claim signs of life persist, albeit otherworldly. Unexplained lights, joined to unearthly music, are allegedly commonplace, and believed to be the work of bishops who were in league with the Devil. . .
Spynie Palace is included in the Lowlands Map.
