Slains Castle was first built in 1597, and was formally known as Bowness Castle.  Slains was altered in 1664 and expanded in 1836.  The castle again was altered in 1644, expanded in 1836.  The castle was sold in 1916 and a ruin by 1925.  The painting depicts 1998.
