Rothesay Castle overlooks the Firth of Clyde from the Isle of Bute.  Perched on Barelegs Mound, the circular fortress is protected by a moat fed by a burn from Loch Fad.  The castle suffered numerous sieges from its origins in 1098.  From the 11th to the 14th century, ownership passed back and forth, first between Norway and Scotland, then between England and Scotland; but from 1334 on, the island and castle were under Scottish control.  Home to the Earls and Marquises of Bute.  In 1401, Robert III made his eldest son, David, the Duke of Rothesay.  The heir of the title, honoring tradition, was awarded the throne of Scotland.  The castle suffered additional sieges in 1462, 1527, 1544, and 1650, and was finally destroyed in 1685; it was partially rebuilt in 1816.  The painting is based on a 2008

artist’s visit.

A Legend of Rothesay Castle

. . .  Many of Scotland's castles not only changed ownership between native clans, but were attacked, sometimes constructed and even owned by surrounding nations.  Rothesay Castle, located on the Isle of Bute, passed between Norwegian, English, and Scottish control.  The castle remained under the Scottish flag since 1334, but the ruins of this noble structure date back to the 1200's . . .

Rothesay Castle is included in the Highlands Map.
