NEIDPATH
NEIDPATH |
Neidpath Castle
Dates from: 1200s Neidpath Castle stands on a steep bank above the River Tweed. The castle dates from around 1200, with the construction of a keep and other additions coming in the 14th century. The structure was expanded and fortified further in the 16th and 17th centuries. The siege of 1650 left Neidpath in ruins, the subsequent partial restoration of which is still visible today, alongside the derelict sections. In an 1803 poem, William Wordsworth lamented the cutting down of Neidpath’s woods; but the area is well-treed today. The paintings are from a visit in 2008.

Side by Side A Legend of Neidpath Castle
. . . Once again, a tap of my cane captures the children's attention, and I speak to them in a whisper. "Remember lads: freedom lives in the heart, then travels to the mind and expresses itself in actions. Now be off with you, and know that thee Kingdom of England shall not reign over Scotland . . .
Told from the perspective
of Bernard of Kilwinning
