HUME
HUME |
Dates from: 1200s Standing on a hill with views in every direction, Hume Castle served as a beacon to warn of invasion. A structure has existed at this location from the 13th century. The formidable castle was destroyed in 1515 and rebuilt four years later, only to be besieged in 1547 and 1569, and destroyed again in 1650. The current “castle” is a folly, built in 1794 on the foundations of the original structure. The paintings render a 2004 view.

Larger Schemes A Legend of Hume Castle
. . . My home, Hume Castle, stands like a beacon near the border of Scotland and England. A stone-mason by trade and a soldier by necessity, I have had, all my life, a double interest in her walls. Even now, I spend my time fortifying the very bulwarks whose protection I enjoy. Through the years, the masonry has consumed most of my days, but not without frequent interruption. Clan raids occur with frequency here in the Lowlands; and a s the skirmishes come and go, I periodically trade my trowel for a sword . . .
Told from the perspective of Coll Eaton
Hume Castle is included in the Lowlands Map.
