HODDOM
HODDOM |
Dates from: 1560 The land development around Hoddom Castle dates to the early 12th century. The current castle was built in 1560 and partially destroyed ten years later; it was restored and expanded in the 17th century. Hoddom’s center tower is regarded as one of Scotland’s greatest: its walls, nine to fifteen feet thick, rise to over seventy-five feet. The castle was inhabited until 1945 but is now derelict. The paintings reproduce its appearance in 2004. Pictured: TOP: Hoddom Castle 8" x 16" oil BOTTOM: Hoddom Castle, the Keep 48" x 31" oil

Unintended Consequences A Legend of Hoddom Castle
. . . Located directly above the substantial structure is Beacon Hill, where a lone tower began to rise between the years of 1562-65. The building was constructed by Lord Herries (or John Maxwell) as a recompense for the relatives who were lost. He named his tower Repentance, and flanked the door with a serpent and a dove referring to a passages from ST. Matthew's Gospel: Be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves . . .
Hoddom Castle is included in the Lowlands Map.
