Hermitage Castle
SCOTLAND

Dates from:  1200s
Associated Clans / Families:
Dacre, Soulis, Graham, Hepburn, Stewart, then Scott

Hermitage Castle is described as the ‘Guardhouse of the Bloodiest Valley in Britain.’  Located on the
 border of Scotland and England,
Hermitage is named after a holy man who lived by the nearby Liddel Water.  The stonework began during the 13
th century with a keep added in the 14th century.  Hermitage was besieged in 1320,
restored by 1390, and further fortified in the 15
th century.  Having fallen into ruin by the early 1700s, the castle underwent partial restoration later that century.  The

painting is based on a 2006 view.

An excerpt from the book Scotland:  Castles and Clans the Legends.

From:

Prophecies

A Legend of Hermitage Castle

. . .  Rory was well-positioned to overhear the Wizard describing the Redcap to William:  This creature is a kind of goblin, native to the Lowlands  of Scotland; they are rare but not impossible to fined.  Once one is summoned, he roams the area, killing in order to keep fresh the blood stains on his hat:  if the stains dry then the Redcap dies.  The creatures are very quick, despite their metal-bound boots and heavy pick.  The only way to escape one one is to quote a passage from the Holy Bible, whereupon it loses on of its teeth and becomes distracted.  Nevertheless, I must warn that the Redcap is to be feared . . .

Told from the perspective

of Torradan Crosar

Hermitage Castle is included in the Lowlands Map.
