HALLBAR |
Dates from: 1500s Hallbar Tower, also known as Braidwood Castle, is located west of the River Clyde. Built in the 16th century, the tower was in ruin by 1800; subsequently rebuilt, it was in ruin again by the late 20th century. Recently restored, Hallbar now exemplifies a structurally unaltered tower house. The painting depicts its appearance in 2004.

Acts of Parliament A Legend of Hallbar Tower
. . . Because it conforms to design requirements in a an Act of Parliament from Edinburgh in 1535, the Tower is believed to have been build in response to the lawlessness. An edict of King James V directed those with property valued at £100 to construct a tower, thirty-feet square of stone and lime, to protect themselves and their tenants from Border raids . . .
Hallbar Tower is included in the Lowlands Map.
