GLENFINNAN MONUMENT
|
Standing at the head of Loch Fyne, the Glennfinnan Monument was erected in 1815 to commemorate the spot where the Bonnie Prince Charlie (the young pretender) raised his banner in 1745. The Jacobite cause later suffered defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. By 1815, the Jacobites no longer posed any political threat, and Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale built the memorial tower topped by a stature of an anonymous Highlander in a kilt.
