EILEAN |
Dates from: 1200s Parts of Eilean Donan Castle date to the 13th century, the keep to the 14th century. The island fortress was besieged in 1539. In 1719, the Spanish Crown, in support of the Jacobite cause, sent three hundred troops to garrison Eilean Donan, prompting the English to dispatch their frigates to Loch Duich to destroy the castle. During the 20th century, the current structure rose from the rubble, and was rebuilt according to the original plans. Eilean Donan is the most photographed castle in Scotland. The paintings are based on an artist’s visit in 2004.
