Eilean Donan Castle
SCOTLAND

Dates from:  1200s
Associated Clans / Families:
Mackenzie then Macrae

Parts of Eilean Donan Castle date to the 13th century, the keep to the 14th century.  The island fortress was besieged in 1539.  In 1719, the Spanish Crown, in support of the Jacobite cause, sent three hundred troops to garrison Eilean Donan, prompting the English to dispatch their frigates to Loch Duich to destroy the castle.  During the 20th century, the current structure rose from the rubble, and was rebuilt according to the original plans.  Eilean Donan is the most photographed castle in Scotland.  The paintings are based on an artist’s visit in 2004.

An excerpt from the book Scotland:  Castles and Clans the Legends.

From:

 Lines of Sight

A Legend of Eilean Donan Castle

. . .  Moving slowly in the sea, we glimpse the island's great castle by bits, according to the in and out of the haze and the up and down of the waves.  It is we who usually look at the castle, but today, t the castle looks back.  The chatter that normally fills our trip is replaced, on this occasion, by an unnerving silence. . . .

Told from the perspective

of Ninian Maclennar

Eilean Donan Castle, High Tide is included in the Highlands Map.
