DUNSTAFFNAGE
DUNSTAFFNAGE |
Dates from: 1225 Today, the location of the castle adjoins the mainland; but Dunstaffnage Castle originally sat on an small island in Loch Etive. The castle, a stronghold of the kings of Dalraida, was the resting place for The Stone of Destiny (the rock upon which Scotland’s kings are crowned). What remains of the castle today began in 1225; it suffered siege in 1309. The keep, completed in the 16th century, is nestled behind a sixty foot curtain wall. In 1685, the castle was destroyed. The painting captures a lovely 2008 vantage.

Alliances A Legend of Dunstaffnage Castle
. . . Bruce's army entered the Pass of Brander under a cloud of arrows to fight a desperate battle where the waters of Loch Awe escape to the sea. But the Bruce's superior guerilla tactics, in a narrow field, overpowered the MacDougalls and forced them to break formation . . .
Dunstaffnage Castle is included in the Highlands Map.
