DUNNOTTAR
DUNNOTTAR |
Dates from: 1100s
Dunnottar Castle occupies an ancient site upon which major structures have existed since the 12th century. The stone castle was built in the 1290’s by Sir William Keith, Great Marischal. The Keith’s are the only Scottish earls to take their title from the office of state rather than their lands; and for over four hundred years the Keith Earl Marichals had the privilege of overseeing all ceremonial matters at the Scottish Court and were responsible for the safety of the Honours of Scotland. In the 15th century, Dunnottar’s keep was constructed. It was expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries, only to be besieged in 1652 and destroyed in 1716. The paintings render its appearance in 1998.

Peasants and Maids A Legend of Dunnottar Castle
. . . Passing through the English line, she freely dispenses coy smiles and shy glances. Then, under the pretense of a commoner's innocence, she disappears over the horizon. Ultimately, her delivery of seaweed, silver, and gold is accepted at Kinniff Kirk, where the Honours are buried in the sanctuary under stone, their security periodically checked. . . .
Dunnottar Castle II is included in the Lowlands Map.
