DUART
DUART
|
Dates from: 1390 Duart Castle, a landmark on the Isle of Mull, is perched upon Black Point. The structure sits strategically at the junction of three seaways – the Firth of Lorne, Loch Linnhe, and the Sound of Mull – which enhanced Duart’s control of the sea trade between the Hebrides and Ulster, Ireland. The curtain wall that surrounds Duart dates to the 13th century. A keep was constructed in 1390; more than a century’s worth of additions followed. After a siege by surrounding clans in 1538, the castle underwent expansion into the 17th century, only to suffer another more devastating siege in 1745, and abandonment by 1751. The castle was restored in 1911. The painting depicts its appearance in 2006.

Through a veil, lies a bony face and skin as shallow as the water that runs beneath. Turning toward me, the creature's piercing eyes take me captive; I sand motionless.. . .
Told from the perspective of Ewan Maclean
Duart Castle is included in the Highlands Map.
