Dates from: 1100s Culzean Castle overlooks the Ayrshire coast. What began in the 16th century as a simple keep saw steady improvement from 1762 to 1775. The castle, in its current state, is considered a masterpiece of Scottish Gothic Revival; it dates from the remodeling, during the years 1777-1792, for which the famous Scottish architect Robert Adam was commissioned, at a price that bankrupted Culzean’s owner, the Earl of Cassillis. The painting is based on a 2006 photo-likeness.

. . . Two cave systems are present under the castle. They are entered through impressive fortifications of arched stone facades complete with walls, doors, and windows. With grotto-like appearance, these entrances face the sea and are easily accessible fro shore . . .
