CRICHTON COLLEGIATE CHURCH

Crichton Church
SCOTLAND

Crichton Church dates from 1449, when it was founded by William Crichton, Lord Chancellor of Scotland.  Similar to many other collegiate churches, located throughout Scotland, Crichton was built for the use of the local lord.  And the college of canons was to pray for the souls of the Crichton family.

In 1560, the Protestant Reformation arrived in Scotland, and during 1569, Crichton Church was being used as a Parish Kirk (Chrurch) with an ordained minister.  Major restoration began in the 1580's, the nave was said to be ruinous.  In 1629, an Act of Parliament, deems Crichton Church a Parish Church for all time.  More restoration was completed in 1729 and the 1820's.  At the end of the 19th century the church was fully restored.  The painting depicts 2006.
