CASTLE
CASTLE |
Dates from: 1388 Castle Stalker sits on the Rock of the Cormorants, an islet in Loch Laich reachable only by boat. The castle was built in 1388 for use as hunting lodge; it was remodeled in the 16th century. In 1745 the castle was unsuccessfully besieged by the Jacobites, their two pound cannon balls bouncing off the thick walls. Eventually becoming derelict, Stalker was abandoned by 1780 and in ruins after 1831; it was restored in the 1960’s. The painting draws on a 2004 view.

ransacks the castle. Bur they are unaware that Alexander's
infant son, Donald Stewart, has been hidden by a nurse in the refuge
of a secret room. To keep the infant quiet, she rocks the
child singing in a whisper. the tow go unnoticed. The
Campbells quickly pillage the castle and vanish into the mist. . . .
