Castle Stalker
SCOTLAND

Dates from:  1388
Associated Clans / Families:
Stewart, Campbell, then Stewart

Castle Stalker sits on the Rock of the Cormorants, an islet in Loch Laich reachable only by boat.  The castle was built in 1388 for use as hunting lodge; it was remodeled in the 16th century.  In 1745 the castle was unsuccessfully besieged by the Jacobites, their two pound cannon balls bouncing off the thick walls.  Eventually becoming derelict, Stalker was abandoned by 1780 and in ruins after 1831; it was restored in the 1960’s.  The painting draws on a 2004 view.

A Legend of Castle Stalker

. . .  It is 1520, an ordinary day in Scotland.  Notable perhaps for the rare morning sunshine that has now turned to gloom, clouds cover the sky and mist hands in the air.  As a storm moves across the water, a marauding Campbell party overtakes Alexander Stewart who is fishing off an isle in Loch Laich.  The ground, near the fortress of Castle Stalker, is stained red with Stewart blood.  Clan Campbell then ransacks the castle.  Bur they are unaware that Alexander's infant son, Donald Stewart, has been hidden by a nurse in the refuge of a secret room.  To keep the infant quiet, she rocks the child singing in a whisper.  the tow go unnoticed.  The Campbells quickly pillage the castle and vanish into the mist. . . .
