BLAIR
BLAIR |
Dates from: 1269
Blair Castle stands in the center of Scotland, controlling the routes through the Cairngorm Mountains and north to Inverness. The first keep was constructed in 1269; a number of expansions and fortifications were added throughout the centuries. After the siege of 1654, Blair was remodeled in the 18th century. It holds distinction as the last castle to undergo siege in Britain, in the year 1745. In 1842 and 1844, Victoria and Albert stayed at the castle under the protection of a hundred Atholl Highlanders. Victoria was so impressed by the men that she presented them with regimental colors, and the Atholl Highlanders remain one of the few private armies permitted in Britain. The painting depicts Blair’s appearance in 2006.

Seasons A Legend of Blair Castle
. . . The piper is close now, playing with purpose and gathering followers. Clansmen emerge from the glens in their one piece plaids. I wear the red and green of MacDonald of Keppoch, the subdued colors providing camouflage against the heather. We travel quickly over the land, animated by a predator's spirit. . . .
Told from the perspective of Leith MacDonald
Blair Castle is included in the Highlands Map.
